Here is what is new!
OSHA’S SHARP program has proved to be successful in protecting its workers from various injuries while on site. “A study of small employers in Ohio found that workers’ compensation claims fell dramatically after working with OSHA’s SHARP program,” according to OSHA’s website. The average number of claims decreased by 52%, cost per claim decreased by 80%, average lost time per claim decreased by 87%, and claims submitted decreased by 88%.
These health and safety programs “foster a proactive approach to ‘finding and fixing’ job site hazards before they can cause injury or illness. Rather than reacting to an incident, management and workers collaborate to identify and solve issues before they occur,” according to OSHA.
Using PPE, personal protective equipment, such as eye and face protection, hand protection, and head protection as well as practicing proper procedures with scaffolding, electrical safety, elevated surfaces, cranes, forklifts, and hazard communication are all key to the overall staff and building safety.
To put all of this into perspective, here are some facts about job site injury rates for the USA:
- Stairways & ladders- approximately 24,882 injuries and 36 fatalities per year
- Powered industrial trucks- 95,000 injuries and 100 fatalities per year (forklift turnover accounts for a very large number of these fatalities)
- Scaffolding- approximately 2.3 million people work on scaffolding and using proper safety measures would prevent 4,500 injuries and 50 fatalities per year
